Slump

(Me and my sister at her kitchen table, October 2011)

I've been in a writing slump since probably 2006.

I've got no one to blame for it but myself. At one time, I had decent contacts and the drive to make a career for myself in writing for publication. Then I got into another career, and then another one, and then another one. And then I got fired, and then I got pregnant, and then I got lazy. I spent dozens of hours of free time tweezing my face, or taking a nap, or Internetting until my brains dribbled out into my bowl of cake-and-milk (the breakfast of champions!).

I finally got a wake-up call of sorts and started to put some tiny, tentative little feelers out there. I got a couple of publication gigs, one of them paying. I went down for a nap one morning and got handed a dream so weird and lightly insane that I started storyboarding for another YA novel.

It's one part heartwarming and two parts frustrating that I've wasted all this time making excuses why I shouldn't write for a living and when I finally decide to put myself out there, God sent a few opportunities drifting my way.

God is good. He is really, really good.

i honestly cannot remember the last time that you and i were together.
it's been dang forever.
and my life is so crazy busy that i haven't even the time to read your blog as thoroughly as i'd like.

but when i do stop by here, i'm reminded how wonderful i think you are.

and now i'm also remembering that i was supposed to write you back months ago.
i'll do that at some point.
promise.

Good for you! I know that slump feeling, not a good one. The other day a friend asked "So are you writing at all?" and I was like, "Umm... I have a blog?" I felt so lame for not writing more.

Kudos for overcoming those "excuses" that I'm all too familiar with. Keep us updated!

Yay Laurie. You are bomb.dot.com with the funny writing. Also I can't wait to read the modern mormon women blog and your contributions.

And when you are a published author I get to say I knew you when you were writing on the occasional visit to my couch. =)

Crazily enough, that's how I'm feeling about painting right now. Good luck! Can't wait to read it!
